MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Located on Lake Huron, near Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada

Trip overview (site #176; electric 30 amp)

We visited MacGregor Provincial Park for the weekend in early May. This was our first camping spot for the 2022 season. We had great weather, however the evenings did get cool with us having to use our furnace. Our site was good however since it was early May the trees surrounding the campsite had no foliage on them yet which made it less private. This site had a marsh surrounding it, but it likely would be dried up during summer months. This didn’t impede our site due to the site being elevated. If there was rain it would have drained down into that area. MacGregor Point had lots of things to do in the park including various hikes. Our favourite was the Old Shore Road Trail, which was along the beach. This had amazing views of the rocky beach. Recommend a good comfortable hiking shoe with a hard sturdy sole due to walking on river rock for various portions of the hike.

Our favourite was the Old Shore Road Trail, which was along the beach.

Summary

  • Bike friendly
  • Dog friendly- with a dog beach
  • Cell service- almost full bars in whole park
  • Beach- large beach area that was mostly rocks
  • Park Store- Basic supplies, souvenirs, fire wood
  • Well maintained bathrooms with multiple shower stations
  • Multiple grocery and fuel options in Port Elgin
Our Site Recommendations

We like sites that are flat (so its easy to level the trailer) and private (so it feels like we’re backcountry camping with the benefits of a trailer).

Old Shore Road Trail- Located inside the park and along the waterfront this trail is easy to walk to from your campsite. It offers breathtaking views of the waterfront with an easy and well marked path. We ventured off to the point for some great photos. The trail spans over 14km, but we decided to just do half of it and walk through the other connecting trails back to our campsite.
