Grundy Lake Provincial Park

Located near Britt, Ontario, Canada

Trip overview (site #236; electric 30 amp)

We visited Grundy Lake Provincial Park for two nights in early May after Oastler Lake Provincial Park. This was our second stop on our ten day road trip. Grundy Lake Provincial Park was a much larger park. Their main office looked newer and had information postage signs outside. There was also a whiteboard where you could write any wildlife sightings here. Their park store had firewood and some souvenirs but no supplies so we recommend buying anything you need before hand. There were no grocery stores nearby so make sure you have all your items ahead of time! Our site was very large and right on the beach. The site did not allow tents but was very large so there’s a ton of room for outdoor games. Our site had an amazing view of the lake with beautiful sunsets each night. The site was a pull through which made parking our trailer very simple. The front of our trailer faced the water so we could watch the sunrise and sunset from our bed through our big window. Our site was not very private as it was on the corner and on the beach so there was people always walking by. We would still recommend and come back to that site as it was the best location and had an amazing view. The beach did not allow dogs but there but they do have two dog beaches at different locations. There was also a pet exercise area as well where the dogs could be off leash. This campground did not have great cell service. Grundy Lake Provincial Park had many hikes and activities to do. Would highly recommend canoeing and kayaking as the lake was beautiful and had many scenic views and islands where you could portage to. We did two hikes, Gut Lake and Swan Lake. Both of these hikes had breathtaking views of lakes and trees. We would highly recommend this park and would come back for a longer stay as there are so many activities and sightseeing to do here.

Summary

  • Bike friendly

  • Cell service- one bar in park with no service spots
  • Beach- several beach areas with separate areas with canoe and kayak launch (Note: no canoe or kayak rentals available within park)
  • Park Store- souvenirs, fire wood
  • Well maintained bathrooms
  • No close by options for groceries; Parry Sound is over an hour away via car.
Our Site Recommendations

We like sites that are flat (so its easy to level the trailer) and private (so it feels like we’re backcountry camping with the benefits of a trailer).

Hikes

Gut Lake Hiking Trail- A 2.5km trail loop approx. 1.5 hours located within the park. This trail could be done at a leisurely pace since there are many spots to stop for photos of scenic views. This trail was mostly rocky terrai with some incline. The trail wasn’t very well marked, we ventured off trail many times since it looked liked the trail could have veered off many directions. The trail markers were difficult to see as they were painted yellow markers on rocks which many had been faded and washed off. In our option this trail had the best views and many spots to stop for a picnic on the rocks overlooking the lake.

Swan Lake Hiking Trail- 1.5 km easy loop mostly flat terrain. This trail was along the boardwalk of the wetlands. This trail said it would approximately take 1 hour but we were finished in 25 minutes. It was well marked and could be done at any pace. This was a nice quick hike that we did in the morning before heading out of the park.
