Oastler Lake Provincial Park

Located near Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada

Trip overview (site #410; electric 30 amp)

We visited Oastler Lake Provincial Park for one night in early May. This was our first stop on our ten day road trip. We arrived just as the main office was closing so we were able to check in. Their main office was still closed for the season so the check in office was in a mobile trailer. We were only staying one night as this park was on the way to our next destination - Grundy Lake Provincial Park. Our site was on Oastler Lake nestled in a private circle with no sites in close proximity. The breeze off the lake was beautiful and refreshing allowing us to sleep with the trailer windows open. Oastler Lake is a smaller campground but we referred to it as a hidden gem. Not as busy and popular than the bigger campgrounds nearby. It had beautiful views of the lake with a beach and dock less than a five minute walk from the campsites. There was a small dog beach as well. We would highly recommend canoeing or kayaking here. Although we did not canoe here we would have liked to. Our dogs have not been in a canoe yet so we wanted to introduce them slowly so by the end of this year they are comfortable enough to go on an adventure! The only downside was the loud train that went by frequently even throughout the night. You could not see it but it sounded very close and was pretty loud. We didn’t find any hikes in the park so we decided to head out and make a stop in Parry Sound. Parry Sound was about ten minutes from Oastler Lake. In Parry Sound we did the North Shore Rugged Hiking Trail. This trail had beautiful views along Georgian Bay with rocky landscape. This trail was 2.5km “out and back.” The hike was all along the shore so it had many spots where the dogs could splash and cool off in the water. It was a very hot thirty degrees out so by the end we took a dip in the Georgian Bay to cool off before hitting the road again.

Summary

  • Bike friendly
  • Dog friendly- with a dog beach
  • Cell service- almost full bars in whole park
  • Beach- small beach area with boat, canoe and kayak launch
  • Park Store- souvenirs, fire wood
  • Well maintained bathrooms (Note: only one comfort station for entire campground that has showers)
  • Multiple grocery and fuel options in Port Elgin
Our Site Recommendations

We like sites that are flat (so its easy to level the trailer) and private (so it feels like we’re backcountry camping with the benefits of a trailer).

Section - riverside & hardwood hill campgrounds. Sites 408-411.

Hikes

North Shore Rugged Hiking Trail- Located in Parry Sound along the rocky beach waterfront. It was an easy well marked path along the beach. There were many spots to stop to take photos. This was a short 2.5km trail that you could take at your own pace. We would recommend hiking shoes as there are many portions of rocky terrain.
